54•40 has been telling Canada where they came from and where they’re going for the last 40 years. Now, it’s time for Neil, Brad, Dave, and Matt to reveal their band culture in a collection of songs called West Coast Band. Through self-referential and often very literal stories, the songs explore bizarre shenanigans, odd dynamics and personalities of its members.

Meet You at the End It was a hot summer night the gig was at a racetrack We located the stage and pulled the van around the back But something was going on you could feel it in the air a thunderstorm And if lightning strikes like dynamite it's not alright there's no show tonight The promoter said guys we've got to get on with the show I've got a truckload of beer that's gotta get sold or I go broke So we looked at each other in the eye knowing we'd make this gig fly and a 1-2-3 I’ll meet you at the end The rain came and blew out the PA But somehow the monitors in front of us were OK So we turned them around to face the crowd and they began to sing along fist pumping We were one one And the buyer said guys just keep on playing through the rain I've got a truckload of beer that's gotta get sold right here So if you want to get paid today better stay on that stage And 1-2- 3 I’ll meet you at the end We took the storm and made it our own Fans and the band took a stand And said love you love you all And so with love we conquered all We were one 1-2-3 meet you at the end

Same Guy Different Body In a club in a Kingston town We were playing a gig to a rocking crowd There was plenty of booze to go all around The manager was happy because the show sold out This night it was kind of wild People getting drunk falling down the aisles I saw the bouncers grab a guy and beat him up and leave him bloody in behind That ain't right Man oh man we've seen it before A really drunk guy who cannot score Let me introduce you to Same guy different body Seen this guy almost every night Gets too drunk and he wants to fight The kind of guy we ignore That's right The gig was over and the night was through The punters went home it was quarter after two So I left the dressing room like I always do And I come face to face with this really large dude Playing my cool in front of this fool And we both could tell and we both sure new One of us was drunk and didn't have a clue So he turned all dark didn't like my attitude He wanted to fight me right there and then And I said holy fuck here we go again No point even reasoning With the same guy different body See this guy every night Big man this guy but a child inside Got too drunk and he thinks he's fly Same guy different body Now he wants to fight me This dude's gotta get a life see Been renamed for all to see Same guy different body Take a breath to cool my jets look around this room Nobody I know is anywhere near not even the crew Just me and this really large dude so I have to talk my way through And by the end I'm singing at his wedding and I feel sorry for the woman that he'll choose Nothing you can do When they show up full of booze Let me introduce you to Same guy different body

Food Loser Hello everybody I got a story to tell About 5440 and a little trip to hell Well we were in a restaurant one day very very hungry We had a little bit of time so we thought we'd order some wine The server said I highly recommend starting with a loaf of bread Then we went around the room and placed the order for our food And when it comes one of us ain't got what he asked for He's a food loser I'm sure it happens to you when you don't get what you choose It either comes cold or late and it's a chicken not a steak Now you know what's happened to you And now you know what your friends call you It's not as if you're a weird chooser You're just a food loser Yeah this is happened to me and I know it will happen to you No matter what you think no matter what you choose You'll be a food loser

Options 04:15
Options Started playing guitar when I was 13 My only dream was to get in the scene Went to Berklee college dropped out really quick Brad called me and said hey Neil this new scene is really sick Why don't you come home as soon as you can Maybe get a part time job and work on the band My old man signed the lease to the Econoline van We'll find ourselves drummer and execute the plan We’ll eliminate the options and never ever look back We got to play the parties in the art school scene Downtown was really happening back in the early 80s We joined with Mo Da Mu stands for modern dance music And music's what we do so it was natural to choose it We put out EP and the rest they say is history It's nice to know your options are behind you It's nice to know there's nothing else you can do It's nice to know It's nice to know Your options are behind you Now all these years later we're still in the scene Brad and I are making it we're where we want to be There's been some ups and downs you better believe To choose a life and music there’s never a guarantee I remember one day in Regina playing a show in the bar And up the road was Blue Rodeo so w Cleare popped and said hello And alone in the dressing room Keelor playing the Blues And I told him other than music there's no job I could do He looked at me and mused it's good to know your options are behind you It's nice to know your options are behind you It's nice to know there's nothing else you can do It's nice to know you don't need to choose Your options are behind you End of story…-

about

This album is the story of 54•40. The songs explore individual stories involving singular band members or incidents that all have their place in the 54•40 handbook of stories. The record is an experiment lyrically, the stories are very literal and linear. If 54•40 was a Broadway musical, this record would be the original score.
